1. Identify the Source of the Leak

• Inspect the Chimney: Look for cracks, missing mortar, or damaged flashing around the chimney, as these are common sources of leaks.
• Check for Moisture: Look for any signs of water damage inside the house around the chimney, such as water stains, peeling paint, or wet spots on the ceiling.

2. Examine the Chimney’s Flashing

• Flashing is the metal or tar around the chimney that seals the joint between the roof and the chimney.
• Inspect for Damage: Look for loose or corroded flashing. If the flashing is cracked or not properly sealed, it can allow water to seep in.
• Seal Gaps: Use roofing cement to patch small gaps or cracks in the flashing. If it’s severely damaged, you may need to replace the flashing.

3. Repair Cracked Mortar or Brick

• Check for Cracks: Inspect the brick and mortar joints for cracks. Water can seep through these cracks and cause leaks.
• Repointing: If there are small cracks in the mortar, use a trowel to remove the damaged mortar and replace it with fresh mortar.
• Seal Larger Cracks: Use a masonry sealant or waterproofing compound to seal larger cracks in the bricks. Make sure the sealant is designed for use on masonry.

4. Check the Chimney Cap
